Images from Asia
1990 - 1999

I've selected a dozen images from the thousands I made in China, Northern Vietnam and Nepal between 1990 and 1999. I chose these photographs because each one spoke to me of a larger story. The divide between generations who leave their village, and those who stay behind. The rhythm of work on the land. Urbanization, and new lifestyles that come with it. The onslaught of Western consumerism. Everywhere I found scenes of women at work, and a surprising number of men at leisure. The images of women threshing rice are from Nepal, some of my earliest, and still some of my favorite photographs from years of work and travel in Asia. I've included several photographs from Hanoi, a journey that I shared with students traveling overland from Beijing. The train stopped at the border in the dead of night, and I will never forget watching the sunrise over Northern Vietnam as we rocked slowly toward Hanoi. How would we be received? I was the history teacher for a group of young Americans, and this was my first view of the lush country America had ravaged with war. Surprisingly, our days in Vietnam were full of grace, which is evident in the few photos from this trip: couples in springtime, and children in a schoolyard playing with American students.

All of these photographs were originally shot on slides, Fuji Velvia or Kodak Ektachrome.
